Privacy

This text is a placeholder until the final wording is approved. It describes how Melo works today.

What we keep

Your phone number (to sign you in), your first name, your birthday, the melos you send and receive, and the photos, videos and voice notes inside them. We keep your birth year only to check your age; nobody sees it.

Phone numbers

We send a one-time code by SMS through our provider, Bird, which processes your number for that purpose. We do not store the code. Your number is kept as a verified sign-in, and as a scrambled value we use to match contacts.

Your contacts

If you choose “Find my friends”, the phone numbers (never names) from your address book are sent to us and scrambled right away with a secret key kept outside our database. We keep only your latest list. You see someone through contacts only if each of you has the other’s number. You can turn it off any time, which deletes the list. Anyone can have their number removed from everyone’s lists on the “Remove my number” page.

Your birthday

Your day and month are shown to people connected to you through a link or through contacts, unless you turn that off. Your year is never shown. It is set once and cannot be changed in the app.

Age

Melo is for people 13 and over.

Deleting

You can delete your account in the app, or at the “Delete account” page. Your name, birthday, photo, contacts and devices are removed right away, and your sign-in ends. Melos you sent stay with the people who received them, shown with your phone number (or the name they saved for it). The rest of your data is removed within 30 days.
